I am pretty certain that none of the CD issues of Houses of the Holy (or any other Led Zeppelin title) have pre-emphasis.
Maybe evereux still can find some time to prepare his cd and itunes sample also.
To save Evereux the trouble, I can confirm that on a casual listen the posted MP3 sounds the same as a FLAC ripped from the 10-CD box set of 1991. (I failed to ABX them - admittedly on my laptop using fairly cheap headphones, but I get the impression they are essentially the same mastering).
I agree that the AAC has a very obvious high-end boost. Houses of the Holy has a fairly bright sound anyway (compared to other Zeppelin albums), so adding extra top-end EQ seems almost perverse.
