CueTools 2.1.5 Error: Description Must Not Be Empty

QUOTE (korth @ Aug 18 2015, 16:07) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Are you using the default parameters for the lame.exe encoder?
What about the tags in the flac files? Anything off?

I haven't tweaked the encoder default settings. I cut and pasted the tags from the source flac files in MP3Tag to rewrite them (not seeing anything off), but the problem stil occurs. I now tried with another set of FLAC files, and now I get another error when starting the encoding: Invalid stride.

I haven't had a chance to try again on my other PC, which I also upgraded to Windows 10 Pro. I'll let you know when I have.

wma vs. mp3 quality comparison

After converting to mp3 same bitrate, the sound considerably worse. Will not improve much even with the big increase.

Use a better encoder.

QUOTE (bluenite @ Aug 19 2015, 08:16) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
What is equivalent to the quality/size when converting wma to mp3? There is somewhere a comparison of the two formats?

128k WMA is about equal to 128k MP3. Maybe mp3 is a bit better these days, WMA hasn't been worked on in a very long time.

Wombat. Thanks for telling me that there are most likely more audible factors created with preventing this terrific ringing as the ringing itself can ever create, I did not consider this. And I,m not saying this sarcastically. Every day I learn something (or at least try to) laugh.gif . Thanks again.

Can I use CueTool to split wav Cue File? If possible, what are the working steps and if there is tutorial would be much better. Many thanks!

i've not tested AAD recently but IIRC it has a last.fm artist download script included. this will no longer function as before because the html layout/URLs have changed since they've launched a new website.

you could start the player with --video-on-top switch (did not actually test this).

Perfect.
I don't know about anyone else, but this is exactly what i needed.

(vlc 2.0.9, tested, works)

WMP Tag Plus - MPEG4, Vorbis and FLAC metadata support for WMP

Went to a backup where I was sure that playback had still worked. And did the registry modifications again.

This time it works. Tags are fine in the WMP and playback works too.

But FLAC tags in the Groove app are still a complete mess, also covers not showing. Strangely, that was different on the attempt before. But I have no idea what I did differently.

Two different encoders showing very different file sizes.

Opus is the best lossy codec out there currently but device support is a little spotty still. OGG Vorbis is near AAC quality level at any given bitrate, is fully open, well supported by almost everything that isn't an apple or microsoft prison (native in android, hell even my Onkyo and Pioneer AVR's support it natively), and any reasonably modern encoder will yield great results with essentially no twiddling needed. As you've found, AAC can be a minefield of wonky encoders, incompatible profiles, is patent encumbered, etc, but it's probably the second most supported format behind mp3. When encoded well it has the second best quality in general, slightly edging out Vorbis and slightly behind Opus. Everything we've mentioned outperforms mp3 in quality, but none of them match mp3 for sheer compatibility since it's been around for nearly 25 years.

esi maya 44 and distorted sound

Hey all, i've experienced the distortion on 2 different computers (both had different motherboards), and both were loaded with Windows 7.

I tried everything to clear up the metallic distorted sound that was occuring at random. I tried updating drivers, formatting the computer drive and doing a clean 7 install, uninstalling 3rd party codecs.

I installed ASIO4all too, and tried different configurations to no avail.

Then i realized what is common about both computers.. Both had a ESI Maya44 PCI and both had a Dlink DWA552 Wireless pci card! Hmmmm....

Well, i'm pleased to say that after taking out the Dlink Wireless cards, the sound distortion problem is solved for me!

If you have other PCI cards installed, try taking them out and see if this clears the problem up. I'm now just using a hard wire connection - problem solved - the Maya44 sounds crystal clear now with Virtual DJ 8.

I hope this helps others...please let me know if this is the solution to your distortion too!

Right... I'm just wondering if more diffusion instead of absorption could create a larger-sounding space.
I have no idea if it would sound slightly bigger but diffusion is not going to make your living room sound like a movie theater or concert hall. An anechoic space will simulate an infinite space (like outdoors).

As Arny suggested, you can make your space anechoic and then add delay and reverb from multiple directions to simulate the reflections of a large space.

Arny made sensible suggestions although I don't know that Phiree amp.

QUOTE (theriverlethe @ Aug 20 2015, 20:10) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
They're not really direct competitors. Jriver is a commercial media center package with an iTunes-like interface, DVD/Blu-ray ripping and cataloging, DVR, DLNA, library streaming, and so on... It does have very full-featured audio support, with built-in DSP's, room correction, EQ, PEQ, VST support, etc. The interface is probably a lot easier for most people to grasp, but I doubt it can do anything on the audio side that Foobar2k can't do with plugins.

So, JRiver prepackages features an f2k user can simply and optionally build into f2k via plugins. And it charges for that service.

f2K plays *everything* I throw at it -- lossy, lossless, 2 channel, multichannel, PCM, DSD -- and via the WASAPI plugin it's bit-perfect digital audio out to my AVR. Plus I can configure how it looks and what information it shows me. All 'for free'.

Right... I'm just wondering if more diffusion instead of absorption could create a larger-sounding space. Obviously, it wouldn't add actual reverb without DSP, as you mentioned.

IME diffusion decreases the audibility of reflections it might be designed to address, which usually has the opposite effect. There may be a shift to greater detail and intimacy.

WMP Tag Plus only works in WMP. I haven't checked it but the plug-in probably doesn't even get loaded when using Groove. There are no plans to extend the plug-in to work in Groove as well.

You're asking about WAV (.wav) in the WavPack (.wv) forum?
CUETools can split a 16-bit, 44.1kHz .wav or lossless .wv image into individual tracks using the CUE file.

Leave advanced settings at default for now. (This may force ANSI filenames.)
For the GUI settings I suggest starting with:
  • Input: Folder browser
    • on the left, find & highlight the CUE (or the Image if it has an embedded CUE)
  • Output: Use template
  • Template: {select}
    • start with [%directoryname%\]new[%unique%]\%filename%.cue
    • This will create a new subfolder \new for the tracks
  • Action: Encode
    • leave the dropbox at default
  • Mode: Tracks
    • leave checkboxes alone for now
  • Audio Output: Lossless
    • Select WAV (wav) or WavPack (wv) from the top dropbox
click GO
One or more popup windows may appear. Make a choice or just click OK.

It would appear that this DLink card uses an Atheros AR5008 chipset and would be supported even by recent Atheros drivers (I saw a version from early this year). A driver update is the very least I would try before ripping the card out altogether. A look at the motherboard manual's interrupt routing table may also be helpful.

That being said, wired Ethernet pretty much always beats WiFi in performance and reliability if routing a cable isn't too much of a hassle. WiFi is convenient but comes with a million gotchas.
